History
The San Antonio Chapter has garnered many national accolades. In 2006, we won the Outstanding Chapter, Best Newsletter, and Best Matrix Event awards.
The San Antonio Chapter held its first luncheon in October 1947 and received its national charter on March 1, 1948. Since its beginning, the Chapter has been one of the most active and diverse of the professional communications organizations in the city. In 1949, the Chapter held its first Publicity clinic. Nearly 60 years later, this biennial event is called the Media Workshop and continues to help non-profit organizations learn media relations.
In 1952, the first Matrix Table Dinner was held “to salute those gracious and capable women who have been our headliners” and to raise money for scholarships. Today this event is called the Headliner/Proliner Awards. The Proliner Awards began in 1980 to recognize outstanding professional achievement. Annually, there are more than 100 entries, testifying to the prestige in which the Proliner Awards are held. In 1989, the AWC Ajay Castro Scholarship for Re-Entering Women was established.
